Got the crank back from the machine shop. It checked out okay (10/20 under). This time I put things together and everything checked out okay (0.002”) on the mains and 0.003” thrust bearing clearance.
Now waiting for the rings.

Just an update. No update. Still waiting on the rings. It seems that 425 parts are not in abundance. Latest word is they ship on May 15th. Will get back on this project. Meanwhile 1970. 472 short block is just about done. More o that later.

Nothing like a lack of parts to put a damper on things. I'm sorry to hear that you are having such issues with your rebuild. Kinda takes the fun out of it huh?
At least you have another one in the works that you can fall back on.

Greg, doesn't the vertical scoring of the cylinder bores bother you?  It would seem to me that the cylinders should have been honed until the score marks are gone.  Won't the scoring reduce the compression and also cause some increased oil consumption?  I have not rebuilt many engines, but that scoring would not be acceptable to me.

Not being critical--it is your engine--just curious!

Well,
I know you out there have all been waiting with baited breath for the continuation of this saga, but as of Friday the rings were still on back order. Rather than have a bunch of parts spread out in my limited workspace I cancelled the order for the rings. It seems for what ever reason parts for the 425 motor are getting sparse, rings, pistons not readily available so I have decided on changing intentions here and not building a stock motor.  Looking into having some high compression pistons cast or looking into what might fit.  I will be back when I have some news IF anyone cares.
Meanwhile on to the stock 1970 472.

Always fun and educational to hear about what you are doing with your Cadillac engines, old man.

Steve,
Glad you asked.  I have gotten the 425 back onto the middle burner, and ordered the parts to finish the build.  In the mean time Besides putting together a couple of 500 motors I have been concentrating on finishing my 70, high compression motor.  That is the one in a previous post.  The heads are still at the machine shop doing the valve and porting work.  Seems they give a new meaning to the expression of "independent businessman".  We are just a week or so out and I will reactivate that discussion regarding HP improvements with the high compression, torque cam and the head work.
Then back to the 425.
