Was the AC fuel filter in the 57 caddy upside down with glass bowl up? We have this in the car and have seen it in pictures on the web. Doesn't seem correct. Looking for photo of original configuration. Thanks

I have seen it too,

but wasn't the idea of the glass 'sentiment' bowl to separate solids or water?

On some cars, the filter is upside down. On my ex-Brougham, this is the case; it's the way the filter was installed at the factory.22 windshield washer.JPG

The 1957's were upside down. In 1958 Cadillac made them right side up. 337913B2-79D2-4F0C-B46F-96B085032095.jpeg337913B2-79D2-4F0C-B46F-96B085032095.jpeg

Ditto Jon S and Roger.
But if you try to open them when their UP, the gas spills out all over the hot engine.   Make sure it's cold and put a catch pan under it if you keep the stock orientation.
ps: I don't like it like this and don't know why they did it, but obviously some "genius" did it for some reason.  But the history says, GM made a lot of bad mistakes that led to fires, deaths, etc. so I'm not a fan of 100% original, for the sake of originality, if it's not up to safety standards du jour.

Bowl in the upwards position to keep the heat from the intake manifold and engine away from the glass . I think it made a big difference.

Since pot metal is a better conductor than glass, I disagree.

I can see the filter ending up upside down on a non AC car because it fits easier at the factory. With a third line it's more fiddly to install.
What year did the third line from an AC equipped car's filter start?

1957. On 1956 cars, the fuel filter is in the same position because, without a fitting looking like a "Z", there is no space to have the glass in the down position.
