Title: WTB 1956 air condioning complete unit
Post by: Flying Finn on March 09, 2023, 06:10:47 PM
I am looking for a original and reasonably complete air conditioning unit for my 1956 62 series convertible
should be the same as a coupe ? just without the vents and roof ducting.
thanks, Jaan  971 235-9599

I didn't think the convertibles came with A/C?

Amazingly,  There was a convertible version offered in 1956. Exceedingly rare.

I do have a 1955 version available ... removed from a sedan.

I believe that is as close as you can get today and anticipate modifications.

I am
Pretty sure I have seen images of an original system for a convertible posted here in years past, in a yellow 1956, probably an eldorado Biarritz. I recollect the blower motors were relocated and the system was narrowed to fit within the folded  top frame.

In Switzerland, a friend of mine has a '56 Biarritz with A/C.

That's quite a bit different than the coupes and sedans units. I noticed immediately that the blower motors are closer together, and the ducts from them to wherever they enter the passenger compartment is obviously different.
So right away it's obvious that you would need to locate one from another convertible.
Thanks for sharing this. I learned something new today.

It also appears that the evaporator case sits farther back in the trunk than a coupe or sedan, probably to allow for the top storage when it's down.
The ducts from the blowers also looks like they are round, not square like a coupe or sedan has.
The blowers are also mounted on the access panel for the evaporator core instead of on the case near each side. So if you used a unit from a coupe or sedan, then you would need to make covers or weld patches for the holes for the blowers, and cut new holes in the access panel. Not something that I'd ever try.
Just a few more observations from a quick glance at your picture.
Thanks again, Rick

This forum is great ..
A lot of gentlemen willing to give great advice.
After reading all the responses to my technical a/c questions and  my wanted posting I have decided
to not install a/c in my 56 convertible .. not unless i found most of the parts from a convertible.
Thanks, Jaan

Wow!  I didn't realize that the convertibles had AC!  I do have a question though.  What type of rubberized coating was used on the blower motors?  Mines mostly there but its starting to chip/seperate and I'd like to restore it to its original finish.

   Tim,
I don't know what that crap is covering the blowers, but I can tell you that it was designed to withstand a nuclear blast. It took me days to get that junk off of the all of my blowers so I could paint them and make them look decent. I doubt seriously that anyone makes anything like that that you can use to match it.
If yours is still mostly there, unless you really want or need a battle, I suggest you leave it alone.
I'm serious, I had to literally grind that $h!t off every one of the blower housings and the motor flanges, and wherever it was on the evaporator case as well.
It's a shame that stuff isn't made like that anymore. Today we get crap that deteriorates as soon as you take it out of the package.
Bomb proof, literally!! Yeah, leave it alone unless you just really need something to do for a few weeks.
