I wonder if this might be Ron Van Gelderen's '49. He did one in this color and spent a TON of $$$ on it. However, if the red upholstery was not stock, it's not his. (His had to be 101% authentic.)

The trim tag shows this car to have originally been Cypress Green with Tan Cord and brown broadcloth...

Having viewed Ron's first showing at the AZ GN in 92, this isn't his. His had a 3 speed with a painted dash.

I didn't think that he would have put "red" upholstery in it. I'm kind of surprised at the painted dash, too. Sure miss that guy.

Ron claimed one could order the dash/sills painted via special order Barry ? I spoke with the club member whom purchased it 20 + years ago the other day and to my delight, he's sending me some duplicate pictures.

It's a nice one, but definitely not Ron Van Gelderen's former car.  I once helped Ron work on it and drove it a bit here in Georgia, so knew it somewhat.  As Jeff said, Ron's had stick shift and the dash was painted like a convertible or Coupe de Ville.  This car has Hydra-matic and a very nice woodgrained dash.  Ron sold his to a guy in, I think, Rhode Island and it later belonged to Jim Murdoch in Mass, who sold it to someone in I think Ohio.

Jeff and Jay,

Both of these 49 coupes are gorgeous cars. The two photos of Ron's cars raise some questions.

The painted dashboard was a S.O. option? But it was standard on the Convertible and the Coupe De Ville?  Also on the Series 75s (which were, of course the old body)?

Its interesting that the oil filter container on Ron's car was Cadillac blue. From what I know about Ron, he got the details exactly right in terms of authenticity. Did some or all 49s come from the factory with the blue oil filter?  In my 52, both the oil filter and the power steering reservoir are Cadillac blue. Most sources (but definitely not all) state that they should be semi-gloss black. Yet I know of carefully-restored cars where they were Cadillac blue like mine. And I'm pretty sure that the previous owner of mine (a CLC member who carefully renewed some aspects of the car) was fussy about details. Can anyone shed light on this issue, or point me to a definitive source?

I don't have the Authenticity Manual for 1948-49. I do have it for 1950-1953.  It states that dealer-installed oil filter canisters for 1950-51 were "light blue with orange tops". It says/implies that factory installed units in years 1950-1953 were semi-gloss black. But in a different place in the same manual, the speculation about 1950-51 oil filter canisters differs slightly.

Any further hard information would be welcomed. There's no shortage of speculation in this area!

Brad,
Thanks for this information. Does it mention a light blue color and orange cap for the dealer-installed versions?

Oil filters were not standard equipment on Cadillacs until 1954.  In 1949 many cars had dealer installed filters, a smaller number had factory installed filters and some cars did not have an oil filter at all.

The latest 48-49 Authenticity Manual, the 3rd edition, does not mention the color of DEALER-INSTALLED oil filter cannisters and covers.  The reason is that if they were AC Model S-6 units, the cannister would most likely but not necessarily have been painted a light or "sky" blue color and the cap a bright orange.  CLC member Fred Hammerle, who owned a '49, did some research a few years ago which indicates that the blue/orange oil filter colors were not introduced until 1950, so the jury is still out on the color of 1949 dealer-installed filters and it is unmentioned in the Auth. Man.  Another reason is that the dealer would also have been free to install other brands of filter assemblies, which could have been any color.  As Brad mentioned, on oil filters installed at the factory, both the cannisters and the covers were painted engine blue.  I don't know what color oil filters were painted in later years.

The painted dash was standard on the 1949 Convertible and the Coupe De Ville.  Ron maintained his gorgeous dash was S.O. (Special Order) and the car won Best of Show at, I think, the 1999 GN.

The 1949 Series 75 has the "old" body, but the dash is a slightly larger version of the dash on other '49s.  According to my 1935-55 Parts List the dash color varies on the various Series 75 models.  On models 7519 and 7523 (the "lesser" Series 75 limos) the dash has a woodgrain Di-Noc transfer (a large decal) like that on Series 61 and 62 coupes and sedans.  On the model 7533 Imperial Sedan with a divider window, the dash is entirely black lacquer.
