Title: 1938 Sixty Special - ANY Grille parts
Post by: joeceretti on August 10, 2013, 06:02:16 PM
I need to buy any grille parts. Anything, even the smallest part you might have laying around. I have some broken horizontals so that is most important.

I have searched extensively and it seems like the grille is the hardest part to find. Next to maybe the visor hinges...

The 37 grill is a million miles from a 38!

It sure is far away but thanks for the try Rich. This grille is starting to look like it's made from unobtanium.

Have you thought about having some parts re cast?  I know it would be awkward because many horizontal  pieces are different than the one below or above so its a new cast every time.  Should be possible if you have all the pieces for the sand mold but shrinkage will be a big issue.      My grill is complete but so badly pitted I'm sure it wont survive chroming so I'm thinking of going down this route.

Hello Joe

Considering the repair and rechroming cost if I were you I would be patient with an ear to the ground for a nice grill.

My grille is complete but has some breaks along the front edge. I've been mulling welding or recasting. It would be much easier to have replacements for the broken parts before sending it to be chromed.

I will be patient but I have the feeling that I am about 10 years too late on this project.

I have a box of 38 grill parts, but I am not sure if it is from a38 60S or a regular 38 Cadillac. My last count was about 13 bars some complete some broken in the centre (which could be repaired.)

Joe,

Any interest in the box of grill parts I have. I believe they are from a 1938 Cadillac 60 series  I am not sure they are the same as a 38 60S.

Hi Bruce, and thank you I sure am. The easiest difference to determine is the width. I will measure mine and let you know today how wide the 60 special grille is. Just in case they are from a 60S and not the 60 series.

Joe,
I checked my 1942 MPB. NONE of the grille parts are the same between 60 series & 60 Special.
I would suggest you send your grille to one of the best platers in the country & have them repair any cracked bars & replate everything. Be prepared for BIG bucks.
I would suggest Final Touch? or Sherms in Ca.
HTH, Bob

At a glance the 38 60s grille & the 38 60 look the same, but without a measurement as Joe is going to do it is hard to be 100% sure.

A lot of things look the same at a glance. I was sure that the 2 grilles were different & took the time to double check. I'm 100% sure the grilles are different. I can't say that for your grille as I've not seen it and you're not sure what it is. Do your measuring & satisfy your selves.

I finally had a chance to measure. The top horizontal is very close to 26 inches from side to side on the back of the V.

Thanks Bruce. It's not the easiest thing to measure while on the car. Yours should prove to be an easier measurement to take, I hope.

I am assuming that yours must be the wrong ones. Must be for the 60 series. :(

If they prove to be no good for Joes 60 special I may be interested Bruce if any bars have usable 'Driver' quality chrome for my 60 series.
