Title: where to source a 12v conversion kit for a '47 Cadillac
Post by: Justin Norwood on February 02, 2018, 03:36:28 PM
I am looking for the best kit for a 6v to 12v conversion for my '47 Series 62 (FYI: I am adding AC). I am okay with going to a 12v ALT; no need to stick with the original looking generator. I was looking at Vintage Auto Garage, and they seem to have a kit for '49-'55 Caddies (http://www.vintageautogarage.com/1949-1955-Cadillac-6-to-12-Volt-Conversion-Kit-p/cad4953k.htm)...but I didn't see a kit for my '47. Any advice on where to source a complete conversion kit is greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
-Justin

Justin,
Hi. Never heard of such a kit.  It's pretty straightforward and not that complicated. A few items have to be addressed. As long as you cover all your bases, you'll be good to go. Maybe have a competent shop do it for you if you're unsure on the details of a conversion. There's so many posts regarding the subject on this forum and on-line. Do some research. Steve Passmore has a great Alternator bracket fabricated that will make your life easier. Use a CS131 Alt and bypass your Regulator internally for a stock look. 6V Starter can stay, you won't cook it, just Spins a little faster, no big deal. >:D Need to address some gauges and change out all your bulbs. Wiring will have less amperage to deal with going 12V.  Enjoy your AC and modern Radio. Good Luck!

Thanks, Bobby. Btw, did you mean a CS121 alternator? (not a CS131)  Just making sure I am not missing anything in my research... There are so many threads on this topic, I may make a 'how to' thread so that a forum admin can 'sticky' it

Sorry, typo. Half right and half wrong.  ::)  CS130 OR CS121 will work.

Sorry Bobby, not enough stock on a CS130 to machine enough off to fit my front bracket.  Only the 121 will work unless one grinds out the front timing cover ears.

Steve,
OK.. I guess that other 10mm larger makes it a No-Go. CS121 it is  ;)........

For posterity's sake...
In terms of the "12v conversion kit" -- Vintage Auto Garage does not offer it for a '47...mostly because they don't have Steve Passmore's alternator+bracket. That said, they can get you the other parts that you need (e.g. voltage reducer 12V-to-6V for Oil, Gas, Temp Gauge) if you call them. I ended up talking to Jay, the technical guy.
