When a starter solenoid goes bad chances are the problem is a bad solenoid relay. On ebay there is a relay for sale. I have no connection with the sale but the only reason I am posting is these relays are becoming difficult to find. Even more difficult is a good starter solenoid. So if you own a 36-42 Cadillac you might find it to your advantage to buy the relay and put it on the shelf.   Bill

hmm.. that sure doesn't look like any starter solenoid I've ever seen on a 40 - 4n Cadillac.  Maybe the earlier ones?

Phil,
That is the correct relay. I'll sell a NOS one for $15 less than the top bid on that auction.

Thats because it usually has a cover over it and the large terminals come out those holes.

To add to what Steve has posted, the 36-42 solenoid relay cover as pictured in picture 1 below has the terminals out the side of the relay cover. Picture 2 shows a 46-48 solenoid with the terminals coming out the back of the relay cover.  Bill

To add on to what Bill said, 1942 models came with both types of solenoids.  Per the 1942 Master Parts Book, the first approximately 5000 cars used the solenoid shown in Bill's first photo.  After that, the solenoid used in photo 2 was used.
