Title: Brake Cleaner/Phosgene article
Post by: 35-709 on July 26, 2009, 10:28:58 PM
A MUST READ ARTICLE FOR ALL OF US!

Like me, I'm sure we've all misused spray cleaners at one time or another...

This article might load very slowly, be patient it is worth the wait to read it.

Geoff -

Well-done.  I think if we were all to take a serious look at our shop habits, this could just as easily have been one of us.

He's right folks - this IS a must-read article for anyone who does their own work - heck, for any one who buys cleaners, etc at the local auto parts parts store (Wal-Mart for that matter).

Thanks again, Geoff.  As James Dean once said, "...the life you save might be mine..."

Many types of chemicals we use in the hobby can be dangerous -- especially if they are:

--mixed improperly with other chemical products provoking a chemical reaction
--heated to the point of chemical decomposition (where the by-products can be inhaled)
which is what happened in this case
--absorbed through the skin by not wearing proper gloves and face masks
--not using the CORRECT kind of chemical resistant gloves for the product being used
Example:  latex vs. vinyl vs. nitrile rubber, etc.
--not having adequate ventilitation when using ANY chemical

Phosgene was used as a poison gas in WW I -- he's lucky to be alive.  It's something that's
used to make polyuerthane materials (which I'm quite familiar with) and a few PPM's can
kill you without much warning.  It has a faint almond odor -- which is usually the last thing
you'll smell.

Take heed of how you handle all cleaners, paints, coatings, adhesives, etc.  The life
you save may be yours!!

I was also informed that burning AC Gas, Freon 12, can release Phosgene Gas.

Didn't read the article yet but Phosgene gas was marketed as Zyklon B in Germany as a pest control product in the '30s. It was then used in the NAZI gas chambers.

You were not kidding about it taking a long time to load.   That must be on a dial up server miles from nowhere.
