Title: 1976 Rocker Moldings
Post by: jagbuxx #12944 on March 26, 2011, 12:00:21 PM
Looking for advice/suggestions. The '76 Coupe is going back together but have a problem trying to reinstall the lower rocker moldings on the bottom of the front fenders. The 2 metal clips are mechanically fastened from inside the fender. The drivers side access is totally blocked by the Track-Master equipment and both rear mounts seem inaccessible as well-like the body side moldings, I think the fenders must have been built up before installation on the line.
The forward molding has more metal or overlap on its inner side than the door or quarter moldings so I can't use the plastic retainers that those are fastened with.
Restoration Specialties does not make a replacement but I really was looking for an easier alternative rather than putting a screw thru the outer side as I have seen before-
Anyone been thru this before???

Hi,
If I understand you correctly, you can't get the molding fasteners back in place because theres no access. (how did you get them off?) I ran into this problem when I painted my 77 Eldo. I had to unbolt the lower end of the fender and squeeze my hand in and unscrew the mounting tabs. Just make sure you don't lose any shims when you bolt it back together and it will be fine.
Good luck,
Joe

That's what I was trying to avoid. During removal the 2 I could not access, we cut them off.
In the old parts book it looks like the replacement part was a snap in clip, part# 1497882. They must have realized the difficulty and offered a replacement.
