Title: 1939 armored ignition switch and coil
Post by: lou-q on May 14, 2011, 09:23:30 PM
Does anyone have any idea how to get the top of the coil off (the part that has the armored cable from the ignition switch going into it)?

Thanks, Lou Quirch

Hi Lou: The attached PDF file should help you separate the coil from the armored cable. If the coil as never been separated from the armored cable then you might find the 70 year old wire inside the armored cable to be brittle and loosing insulation, resulting in a bare wire. Look closely at the wire as it enters the armored cable from the coil or the ignition switch. If the insulation looks bad it could result in a short to ground unless repaired.

Thanks Bill,
That wasn't difficult once you know the right way.
You were right, the wire is bare in a couple of spots.
Now to the next question.
Do you know what the right procedure to replace the wire is?
Thanks again,
Lou Quirch

Lou: There was a club member in I believe PA that would replace the wire. I think he has advertised in the Self Starter. I can`t come up with the name and I will have to search my records. Maybe someone else can add to this posting. I will get back to you when I find the name.

Marty Watkins is the person in PA who replaced the wire in my armored cable.  215-355-1519   martyhw@msn.com  He is also the club technician for '37-48 Cadillacs (see page 38 in the 2011 CLC directory).  I believe he is also the immediate past regional director of the Valley Forge Region.
