Title: Google's gone nuts
Post by: Doug Houston on July 04, 2014, 11:17:00 PM
In the last few days, I've started a search for information, on Google. In the past, I've gotten listings on my topic, and all went well.

NOW, whatever you start a search for, you get loaded onto EbAY with the tings you're asking about  for sale. For instance, I wanted to look up a zip code for a letter. BINGO, here's a page with Zip directories for sale. Google is no longer a search engine, but a directory for eBay.

Don't know whose idea this is, but Google is out the window, so it seems. You can only get so far, stuffing things down someone's throat before you have a big mes to clean up!!

Doug, check your computer.  I just did a search on Google for the zip code for a city and none of the top ten results went to ebay.

If you download a file sometimes you get other things with it that change your browser search function to only get “member advertisers”.

I agree with Glen. Just did a random search on Google and no sign of any ebay crap.  As he said if you download something a page will come up saying they will alter your browser for this, add some other program for that and mess it all up.   You must click the 'refuse' button.  They will change your tool bar and everything else given half a chance.

Sounds like you got a piece of malware hijacking your search function.  Had that happen here too when I let one of the kids use the laptop.

Try downloading Malwarebytes and running a scan on your computer.  Should clear it up.

I wasn't able to access Google for a couple of days. I did get a notice from AOL saying there was some sort of a problem they were working on. It is fine now. Who knows with these machines.

The reason I know about this is I bought a new laptop and it worked fine until I downloaded a program I used a lot on the old computer. Suddenly my browser would not go to Google at all and all searches went to sites selling stuff not necessarily related to what I was looking for.  I had to reload the operating system and wipe the memory to get rid of it.  Luckily I had not loaded too much on the computer before that.

Now I always read everything and make sure I understand what I am downloading before I hit the go button.

Gee, Dan. Did that and now I don't have any internet on my desktop at all!
