can a !956 dual quad air cleaner be modified to fit a 1957 dual quad by shaving down the sleeve  from 2 inches to the correct size or are there other changes that need to be made

Like everything that appears to be simple at first glance. . . I know the pots on the 57 are not positioned centrally. You really need to have both side by side by side to compare. Could end up costing as much to modify as finding a correct one to start with.

m,
Q is correct.
It is not only the height of the tubes, but the offset of the pots at the ends of the wings.
The screw with the wing nut goes down through the wing to the pot, which has either the screw-in fitting in the center of the pot or is offset.
Why offset, because the pots may need to be rotated eccentrically to avoid linkage/lines, and if you have AC on the other side, those lines as well.
Oh, and good luck finding a correct 57 that is complete, hasn't been in a fire or beat to death - patience grasshopper.
Check it out first, took me years.
Have fun,
Steve B.
