Title: Need pic or help with '37 75 hood assembly
Post by: Weaklink on November 01, 2015, 10:05:39 AM
Father bought a basket-case '37 Series 75.  Not sure if we have all the parts to put it back together.  We were looking at the two top hood pieces and how they fit together.  Looks like there is a third part that makes-up the hinge?  As teh two hood pieces do not inter-lock.  Is there a small skinny center beam that is fixed on the centerline?  We have a manual but the illustration does not help much.  Is there a chrome strip that runs across the centerline and is affixed atop whatever makes the center hood hinge?  Thanks

James, There is a stainless strip with curled edges that the two hood halves slip into which acts as a hinge. The strip attaches at the cowl and hood. I don't have pictures but there have been some on here. I'm sure someone will have them and post.     Harry

Just to add to what Harry said the centre hinge strip is actually steel but has a stainless cover over it.
The steel section almost always rusts away and are very difficult to find good ones. I had a fabrication shop trying a dozen times and they still couldn't produce a strip that would actually hold both half's together in all positions   .Best of luck looking for it.
As I recall I swapped a stainless cover with Ty Stinson some years back and he was listing it for sale recently here on the forum. You would still need the core though.

I'm brand new to the club, but might be able to help if our car is the same as yours, can you send me a photo of what you have and I can see if our car is the same or close? I don't know much about our car as far as the technical side but am trying to learn as much as possible. I think ours is a 37, 75 series and it is a convertible, but would the body be the same?

All the hood hinges are the same design but longer for each series.  Mine is a 60 series and Tys is an 85. You could cut down the longer size if you could find one.

I'll get some pictures in the morning.

This is a pic of the hood on our 37- 75 series, not sure if it will help or not.  There appears to be a hinge assembly that the two hood covers, left side and right side attach to that runs down the center of the top of the hood attaching to the frame, with each side splitting in the center on their own hood hinges. Hoods accordion up and sit on a arm with a little rubber wheel on it, that moves up and down to support the hood in the open and closed position.

I just responded to your other post about trim plate info. The engine has 1937 heads on it and is probably or could be original. The VIN for the car is stamped just beyond and below the last spark plug on the drivers side on the crankcase just ahead of where the bellhousing attaches. You may have to clean the area to find it.     Harry

Look at the picture posted by tkcmt2@msn.com and you will see what the centre strip looks like.

Hello James, I do have the top center SS hood strips if you are interested in purchasing one. I also have three sets of the top two hood sections, and may have one of the steel center strips.
