Title: 65 and 66 Carter carbs used from factory
Post by: Chuck Swanson on February 14, 2018, 06:41:23 PM
I have multiple 65-66 cars and almost all have the 1965 429 Carter AFB 3904 carb.  A couple have Rochester's.  I try to stick with Carters as I have a couple Carters rebuilt, and slightly easier to change on other cars if needed, or for troubleshooting.  I was looking in my 40' storage container for a 429 W/O AC Carter AFB 4168 carb to rebuild and put on my '66, but could only find more 3904s.  Most have date codes ending in 4 or 5.

I then zoomed in to an old pic of my '66 during disassembly, and sure enough the orig carb on it when I bought was 3904.  Some low mileage cars I have, the carbs with the TR bolts look like were never removed.

Bottom line, could the factory have used 3904s in some of the 66s too?  Not a big deal, but restoring '66 to original and I didn't know if there were any differences in 3904 vs 4168.  Any?

Oh, I accidentally send my rebuilder a 1966 429 With AC (A.I.R.) Carter AFB 4171.  He only disassembled so far, and I asked him to wait before going any further.  What is the difference in the AIR carb (California emissions carb)?  I will probably sell the AIR carb.

Thanks, Chuck

Chuck,
The difference between the AIR carb and the standard carb is in the metering rods and the primary clusters.

Greg,

I saw this post about 65/66 carbs and thanks again for selling me the two rebuilt 1966 Cadillac carbs you had.  I installed the second one on a 65 Cadillac this week, and it was a nice success.
