Title: 1959 Coupe de Ville
Post by: jorgefife on October 27, 2019, 08:14:58 PM
My son and I restored this car over the last 12 months. It is garaged at my house, along with my 37 LaSalle and a 78 Rolls Royce
On the Cadillac, I had a mechanic fo some work on the car: he installed a newly recondicioned carburettor, valve covers, distributor, etc. Yesterday when I took it for a drive, the screws holding down the valve covers were oozing oil, and the car has no power. I am not letting this quack touch the car again
Back in South Africa I had a few 59 models oner a period of 20 years, and I had a very good engine man
Here in America I don't know any one
My question: does anybody know of someone who understands these cars, and can make it run just like it should be?
Please let me know
Thank you

G'day Jorge,

These engines are simple things, so any Mechanic worth his salt should be able to work on them.

Look for an "older" mechanic, and if you have one in your area, look for a "Mens' Shop".   https://mensheds.org.au/  There are a lot around here.   Older folks that are retired and looking for something to do congregate in these "Sheds".

Hello Jorge

Glad to read of your Father-Son 1959 Cadillac restoration! For 1959 Cadillac mechanical issues I would recommend that you consult Ronald Threadgill. Additionally consider joining the 5960 Cadillac Chapter. Ownership of a 1959 or 1960 Cadillac is not necessary but CLC membership is required. Send me your name, email address, model and expertise area. We push our car hobby.

I found 2 valve covers for the 59 Coupe deVille
I know they are originally dark blue, but does anyone know what exactly spray (HEAT RESISTANT) I should buy
Or a code number and where to find it
Thanks
Jorge

It's called Cadillac Dark Blue.

Bill Hirsch paints.

Big Fins, thank you so much!
Do I need an undercoat or do I spray straight from the can?
And obviously, it is heat resistant. Good to know
I will order some
Thanks again

Paint straight from the can.

BUT, before painting, I always give the engine a spray with Brakleen to remove any possibility of contamination (oil or grease), and this stuff evaporates away, leaving a dry, paintable surface.

I am only spraying the valve covers. But I will take the advice to spray the motor with Brakleen
Thanks for the tip

I use Brakleen for everything in the Garage/Workshop.

The Wife even has a can in the Laundry, and it is a great spot remover.

:)  Our local NAPA has a deal on their version of Brakleen --- $1.99 by the can or case.  I bought a case.  Slightly smaller can than the Brakleen but still a bargain.

Thank you all for the help on the 59 Coupe
I will be asking for help on the 37 LaSalle under a different heading, going back to what was already posted
Thanks again

Jorge: I believe we may have communicated about your Cadillacs in the past.
Not much I can do for you in the "help" line.
I just wanted to show you the pre-owned, low-mileage 1959 Coupe de Ville I bought "sight unseen" in Portland, OR, in 1983.
I paid $5K for her; that price included repaint of the lower body from black to white, as well as a repair to the stitching on the driver's seat.
"Miracles" like this don't happen every day.

Show us your car(s) when you have time.
