Howdy,
Running down almost to the end of the list of things that need doing...I've come to an inop thermometer on my driver mirror.
Anybody know how to remove this, and repair? Mine appears to be stuck.
There is access from the side of the mirror facing the front, but I don't know what tool to use to remove the thermometer.
Thanks,
Joe
I swapped out my inaccurate thermometer assembly on my '76 some years ago.
The plastic housing is bonded to the chrome.
Be very careful and I don't suggest trying to push it out from the opening in the front, you'll probably end up cracking the housing.
If I recall, I used a razor blade and a fine pic tool to break the seal around edge of the clear housing.
Sometimes the unit can be twisted off as well. I collected several of them during my junkyard visits over the years.
They didn't work when they were new. Mine, and my partners stopped working within the first few months. Being in the new car business, I pretended mine worked, and pretty much ignored it

The one on my '74 work just fine...
My '76 works fine too and pretty accurate unless you're in the blazing Florida sun. Then is always reads 100F or above. ;)
I don't think I have ever seen one not working. I just assumed they were reliable.
Won't be accurate if the car had been sitting stationary in the sun. Car has to be moving at speed to get anything close to a reliable reading and then I've usually found them to reasonably accurate.
This is of a '79 I had taken during a hot day!
Does anyone know how they work? Mine moves, but seems to be ~40 degrees to high, so I'm wondering if it's possible that the gauge has vibrated down over the years...wondering if there's a way to repair.
Just a sensor in the forward section of the mirror mount with a thermal spring inside with the graduated cap.
Who cares if they work or not. They look COOL. :)
