Title: 2 questions about 1962 CDV A/C...
Post by: 62 CDV on May 18, 2022, 11:18:56 PM

Recently, I had my classic car mechanic test the A/C system in my '62 CDV, and he said that the only faulty part he found from the test was the suction throttling valve. Since there is no refrigerant in the system at this time I know I can remove the valve and rebuild it with a kit I purchased some time ago. Will I need 525 viscosity oil during the rebuild process? If oil is needed I'm pretty sure PAG oil will not work in this case. Am I right about that?

Also, I remember Greg Surfas saying that R414b is a good drop in for freon based systems. Is this still true? I'd like to keep the hardware in my car as original as possible and would like to avoid the diminished cooling properties that R134A gives in classic cars.

Thanks in advance for the due diligence. I do appreciate it.

Unfortunately R414b has gon the way of the Dodo bird. It is now more expensive than R-12, so although it served me well for nearly 20 years I'm back to 12. 525 wax free mineral oil is still available. You mention PAG oil and R134a. Neither of these shoul ever be used in a system that contains even a minuscule amount of Mineral oil.
Re. The hot gas valve, if your kit contains a new diaphragm then use it being ultra careful to follow directions in the FSM as they might be and remember, cleanliness is next yo, you know what.
