Title: Guidematic 1977 Eldorado
Post by: Dickiebear on August 17, 2022, 12:50:31 AM
I have a 1977 Cadillac Eldorado base model. I've been having trouble with the foot switch for the bright lights, when I press it the brights come on but when I release it they go back off. I want to replace the switch but I don't know if my Eldorado has the Guidematic control. How can I tell if my Eldorado has Guidematic?

In the headlight switch if is back labeled with :

1) "LIGHTS" this car has no light options)

2) LIGHTS and SENTINEL  (this car has automatic
dusk/dawn headlights.

3) SENTINEL and DIMMING (this car also has automatic dimming)

4) LIGHTS AND DIMMING (this car has automatic dimming)

If it has automatic dimming, there should be a strange-looking "eyeball" under the hood between the radiator and front grille.

To test if it's a switch issue, you can 1) cover this eyeball with a non-reflective cloth (preferably black) to effectively disable it, or 2) you can turn off the auto dimming system using the headlight switch. If I remember correctly there is a small switch that moves left to right above and behind the pull-out headlight switch. If you turn this small switch all the way to the left you should feel a slight "click". This disables the auto-dimming feature.
