GM Motorama article in August 2008 Automobile magazine

Beautiful picture of the updated Le Mans

A side-bar note in this great article (page 95) refers to the designing of the beautiful 1956 Eldorado Brougham Town Car. According to Mr. Robert Cumberford, while working in a GM styling "body studio" he came up with a roof profile that hinted at a convertible's cross bows (visible on a hard surface roof externally). Mr. Cumberford thought this look would be elegant in coming up with a design for the Eldorado Brougham that would be formal and suitable for attending the opera. Mr. Harley Earl saw it, liked it, suggested a black leather padded roof, and the rest is history. As Mr. Cumberford put it, "That roof profile showed up later on millions of early -1960s GM cars". What a story! Charles D. Barnette
