While I was driving today the shift indicator failed. It somehow moved to the right, when in P it points to  L. The indicator moves but it can only reach L and R, no matter which gear is chosen. Shifting isn't affected though, it's simply a problem of the indicator.

Did this occur to somebody else before? Can the shift indicator be reached through the cover on the underside of the steering column?

Yes,

There are two special fasteners that allow access to the lower steering column cover.  Remove them with pliers or whatever works unless they were already changed to something else.

Look at the column from the passenger side.

There is a square hole and a special nut that clips into that hole.  Hopefully it is there.  There are also two allen set screws that hold the pointer to this nut/bracket arrangement.  It's common for the nut to pop out of the column which makes the pointer flop around.

Once you get in there and take a look it will make sense.
