so what's the function of this latch on the hood of a 56?

I am talking about the thing in the center of the hood, looks like it is going to touch the wiper motor. Mine is missing altogether what does it do?

The function is to reduce vibration when the hood is closed and add a little strength at the same time.

Most times it is missing. Keep good care of it.
