Can anyone please let me know if the wheel covers used in 1953 were stainless or chrome plated? I want to buff mine out but dont want to ruin them if plated. Thanks, Jim

My recollection is that they were stainless steel and then what they called flash chromed over the stainless,  Dont go to the bank on this but I think this was the process.

If it is anything like 1949, there are two types - stainless and chromed mild steel.  You should be able to check from the back side of the hubcap.  The stainless shouldnt have even a hint of rust except for any rust rubbing from a mount clip, etc.

Thanks all. My main reason is try try and buff them out with a buffing wheel and a stainless compound. It would ruin it if it were chrome.  Jim
