Does anyone have any experience of this happening & why it happens, & is there anything that can be done to prevent this , any modifications, have 2 cars one has a rebuilt engine but dont have any confidence in going out in it , please reassure me, car appears to run well, & have run at various revs for hours without mishap.

I see your problem.  You don't have a block to keep the rods in.

PS - Sorry just couldn't resist.
If... the machine of government... is of such a nature that it requires you to be the agent of injustice to another, then, I say, break the law.  ~Henry David Thoreau, On the Duty of Civil Disobediance, 1849

If we desire respect for the law, we must first make the law respectable.  ~Louis D. Brandeis

Phil , I don't know if i can be of help or not. Do you live near an engine- machine shop.In MHO you will have to get the "rod strighten" And the engine "line-bored". also when you go to assembly the engine. MAKE sure that the rod bolts DO NOT HAVE ANY LUBE ON THEN. Also, if the block has not been "surface"ground , do it. At the very least have it checked for squareness. In my previous STATEMENT I said to be SURE that the rod bolts were clean of any lubicant I didn't mean the BEARING, lube the bearing as usual, just don't get any on the bolts OR nuts. MAKE SURE that they are dry.
