I need help from someone with a ’67 Shop Manual. Where is the Engine Unit Number located on a ’67 429? The Shop Manual has this information in the first few pages near where it describes the VIN location. In ’66 the VIN is on top center crankcase above the torque convertor, and the Engine Unit Number is on the back driver side cylinder block just below the head. I’m looking at a ’66  429 with a VIN that doesn’t match any year numbering system and it doesn’t have an engine unit number where it’s suppose to be. I’m trying to determine if this was a factory replacement engine done early in the car’s history.

Thanks,
Ralph

From my shop manual;

VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER LOCATED ON REAR PORTION OF CRANKCASE BEHIND INTAKE MANIFOLD

VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER LOCATED ON LEFT FRAME SIDE RAIL OF 693 CARS AND ON RIGHT FRAME SIDE RAIL OF ALL OTHER CARS

Hope this helps.

Antoni,

Thanks for responding. Do you know where the engine unit number is located on a '67 engine? The shop manual section that describes the VIN location would say where the engine unit number is located, most likely on the same page or next paragraph.

Ralph,

There does not seem to be anything that describes the location of the engine unit number. Perhaps the 67's did not have one? Here is all of the identification number information from the manual:

Vehicle Identification Number
Each Cadillac automobile or chassis carries a Vehicle Identification Number. The number is used in license and insurance applications and in general reference to the automobile. The letter indicates the sales code, the first digit of the number indications the model year, and the last six digits indicate the sequence in which the car was built (see Page 0-3). The last six digits of the first 1967 Cadillac automobile manufactured is number 100001, regardless of series or style; subsequent cars built are numbered in numerical order. On engines built to low compression specifications, the letters L.C. are stamped on the engine block just below the head surface at the rear of the left cylinder bank. (my emphasis) Vehicle Identification Number locations are shown in Fig. 0-1.

Identification Numbers
Locations of identification numbers on various units are shown in Fig. 0-1. The identification number on the unit should always appear on forms sent to the Central Office such as PIR's, Claims Tags, Pre-Delivery Reports and, when required, on AFA's. The Vehicle Identification Number, and the transmission unit number are particularly important when reporting product information on these components.

From Fig. 0-1

TURBO HYDRA-MATIC TRANSMISSION UNIT NUMBER PLATE LOCATED ON RIGHT SIDE OF CASE [EXCEPT 693].

TURBO HYDRA-MATIC TRANSMISSION UNIT NUMBER PLATE LOCATED ON LEFT SIDE OF COVERTER HOUSING [693 ONLY].

There is no description for the engine unit number, just the transmission, and some ancillaries such as the A/C compressor. Let me know if this helps, or if there is anything else I can look up.

For '65-'67 engine number it's the same location - Rear portion of crank case, top edge of housing face, back of valve cover at right angles with crankshaft.
