Hi All, A happy New Year to all. Im thinking about picking up a spare engine for my 39 Cadillac 75 and was wondering what years will fit. Seems my current engine is a 41. What year flatheads can I use without having a problem? Thanks in adv. :)

There are minor changes from year to year but they will all fit your car. My car (1942  6719) was once owned by the military in Utah but the engine came from the east coast according to the history. I suspect the military had  a spare engine from a wrecked car and shipped it to Wendover when the original engine on my car failed.

There is a 1939 engine and trans right now on ebay. The item number is 111485060583. It is not mine.

Not that there are many around and not that you would want to anyway but, to give a complete answer to your question, fitting a '36 flathead would be a bit of a nightmare. The engine mounts are all wrong for later years.

Too right there John, I have one on a stand in my workshop and we have competitions to spot the differences, of which there are many beside the engine mount issue.

I don't think thats a 39 engine, for one its automatic and I think I can see the flat piece of casting above the water pump where post war engines have there number.

Thank you all for the replies. Yes it appears later than 39. My exhaust exits on drivers side, automatic didn't come out till 40 iirc. But another question is, Wasn't the Lasalle engine a 331 cubic inch. I believe mine is 346 from literature. The engine number would tell all.

Your exhaust only exists from the drivers side because its a big series, none of the small series does this and automatics were not until 1941.     La Salles were  actually 322 cubic inch and yes, yours is a 346 if it still has its original engine.
