I have to change out the rear axle bearing and seal on my 1939 60 Special.  As I understand it, I have to pull the rear axle to do this.  What holds the axle in place?  Do I have to go into the differential to free it?

Nothing holds it in the diff, remove the brake plate and bearing cover then pull the axle out with the bearing and seal. A slide hammer usually does it.

This PDF file of an exploded view of the rear brake drum might help. Use a press to remove and install the axle bearing. Do not use a hammer and punch to remove the bearing as one slip with the punch can damage the axle surface under the seal and cause an oil leak.    Bill
