exactly where should the pointer point to between the 2 lines on the crank ? or where? im near there but the rotor is pointing about 180 degrees away from number one plug . I put a 12 volt battery and she turns over real good but wont crank thanks john

If your 180 degrees out you need to turn the engine over one full turn and the rotor will then point to number one, thats if you have the timing set correctly??  One of the timing marks should say IGN about it. thats the one you want.

John: Let me add to what Steve has said. You can time the engine either using number 1 cylinder or number 6 cylinder. I like using number 6 as it is close to the battery and I can get power for my timing light from the battery and not be worried about getting caught up in the fan by clamping on to number 1 plug. So if your rotor is pointing 180 degrees away from number one plug then it is pointing to number 6 plug, so time from 6 plug. Below is from a tune up book on Cadillac which shows you where the pointer should be in the timing process by looking at the pointer.  Bill
