I am speaking of where the heater hoses attach to plumbing and go through the firewall.  I developed a leak on the engine side of the firewall where the heater plumbing goes through a detachable plate attached to the firewall.  I used some Bar's Leak Liquid Copper and that seemed to take care of the leak.  What is the black gummy substance on this removable plate and around the heater plumbing.  What is the purpose of this material and is there a workable replacement substance that looks and does the same job.  I have lost about a third of what is normally there due to the leak.  The car is a 1954 model 62.  Thanks for any help on this.  Jim
