Well, here I am again stuck trying to figure out how to dismantle this car.  I've removed everything from the steering column so all that is left is the column going into the steering box.  I can't find anything holding it in the steering box like I have on more modern cars, yet it doesn't want to pull out.  I don't want to force it in case there is something else I need to do.  The shop manual doesn't mention anything about removing the column.  Do you any of you know a trick to get it out?  Thanks again.

I think they are a heavy press fit, steel tube into cast box. Why would you want to remove it? Its not necessary to dismantle the thing.

I believe the factory intent is to remove the column tube and gearbox as an assembly. It comes out from the bottom after you remove everything at the steering wheel end, remove the pitman arm, and remove the gearbox mounting bolts. Depending on the nuances of your car, you may also have some bits of the shift linkage to disconnect as well.

Paul is absolutely correct if the steering box is still in the car. I had presumed you had the box out and wanted to dismantle it??
If its still in the car and everything on the top end including the bracket holding it to the dash is already off, you remove the drag link connected to the Pitman arm. (no need to remove the arm)   Disconnect the clip holding the selector rods on the column in the engine bay.  Disconnect the horn wire half way down the column.  Remove the three large bolts through the chassis holding the box on and with the car elevated slide the unit out of the bottom.
