Just for the record, Honda has this feature on their Asian market 125 "scooters".  Not all of the manufacturers use the starter motor. Mazda for one has the electronics to sense the piston(s) positions and uses combustion to start the motor.  Yes that's right, fuel?spark sequenced on one cylinder to get the motor running.  Ain't progress wonderful.

All this technology is a pain. As we speak, I am fighting with my washing machine. My wife had me run the sheets while she was out and like a guy I threw them all into 1 load. It is out if balance and I have to wait 3 min after I stop it for the lid to unlock. It also doesn't have just a spin feature so it wants to refill it, agitate for a minute and then drain and spin.
It takes the human factor out of it. It thinks it is smarter than I am..... and today it may be right.  Old school is gone my friends.  Jeff

Its not quite gone yet, certainly not at my place.  There is serviceable stuff
dating back to 1938, and practically all from the 20th century.  The old
stuff was generally built so it could be repaired, and a few of us have continued
to repair it instead of replacing it.  Sometime the failure modes were reduced;
note the 304 stainless exhaust systems on cars here.  Parts can be a problem,
but the internet helps that, I have a HUGE collection, and some parts can be
made (better than the original).  Bruce Roe

I have no idea how this feature works.  It sounds as though some sensor determines the car is stopped and not moving so it kills the engine?  When you take you foot off the brake it signals the car to start?

I wonder, if one came to stop and immediately applied the emergency brake would the car keep running?

The whole thing confirms my theory/suspicion/belief that "newer is NOT always better!"

Yea, how to keep the hot water going, the battery charged (running the
heater, rear defogger, lights on one of our 20 degree below zero nights),
and some other stuff.  How about making out in the park?  When some
people freeze to death after the car gets stuck in a remote place, they
will start rethinking it.

The car motion might trigger a sensor checking rotation of a toothed wheel.
Find those toothed wheels, inject a few extra pulses into the sensor wiring;
the computer will think the car is moving a bit.  I won't be writing up the
cheat, watch for someone else to put it on the internet.  Bruce Roe

Just bought a 16 xts and it was told to me the hold is for emissions.  Their thinking if every car stops a little emission production they are saving the world.  IMO its another item that will eventually fail and need repaired/replaced.  Job security ehh.  Tony
