Since we're car guys (& gals), do you see numbers differently?

Not sure if its just me, but when I see certain numbers, I associate with an engine size or year model.

We have a digital clock that projects time on the ceiling at night.  Often in the middle of the night (to drain the tank), I wake up.  I see the time, it'll say 3:31 or 4:25 and I see 331 or 425 (cubic inch engine).  I also see 426, 427, 454, 455 and 500 as well ( I like big blocks).

At work, we use pattern letters, one of them is pc 0001721964.  I see 1964 and picture in my mind a '64 Cadillac.

When driving, the speed limit is 70, I associate that with cars built in 1970.

Izzat weird or do you also associate numbers with cars, engines and Cadillacs?

I went to NAPA last week to get an o filter for one of the cars and had a senior moment and could think of the filter number. Went to the counter and asked the clerk to check the part number for an oil filter for a 1976 Cadillac 500ci. He got on the computer and the first thing he said was "my god that car has a 8.2 liter motor". Well guess it does but to me it will always be a 500....

Not weird at all.  I do the same thing.

I have a password I use for something once in a while.  It's 8594.  If I forget I just think of my 85 Eldo and the 94 Seville we used to have as a quick mental reminder.  Those numbers just bounce around in your head forever.

Hey Brian, you are correct I know some of the early 70's Eldorados had a badge on the grill and some with it right behind the front wheel opening. To bad the devlle/fleet woods did not have an exterior badge... Well only a few more weeks and you can get out the new 70. I know you must chomping at the bit...

My passwords that I generally use are anagrams of my grandchildren's initials with a "mistake" in one of them. I was going to astonish you with the 1941 production run # which I think is 66,130) . The SN of my first M-1 rifle in ROTC in high school was 3515685, and the third M-1 (a Winchester) was 1173370. What the second one was I haven't a clue, nor any of the weapons I used in the Army. Although my SN there was RA16633632.

It IS interesting how some such #s will be retained in our memories. (I do recommend that you remember your wife's birthday, and anniversary date. By doing so you will be able to continue to buy cars and the parts needed for them.) An unexpected box of chocolate won't hurt either. (But if you generally don't buy her flowers, DON'T, as that may trigger suspicions that your "helping" the cute neighbor lady across the street is more than it seems.)

I think its natural.  I gave the machine shop my cell phone number and he immediately said "I did not know you were a Ford guy".  Huh? He then pointed out that the first three and the last three numbers were unique Ford engine displacements.  I can't get that out of my head now when I think of my phone number.

So if SAE time is 2:31 does that mean metric time would be 3.8?   If metric caught on in the USA Dolly would have been singing workin 14.7 to 8.2 ?   Military metric time 14.7 to 27.8?

I absolutely see numbers and connect them to something either automotive or baseball-oriented. I need to bill my time at work, which means keeping tracking a bunch of matter numbers.  Some people are surprised at my ability to reel off certain numbers, but how can you forget when they end in 327, 348, 426, 454, 455 or 472? Same with baseball; 755, 367 (.367) and 112 (1.12) are numbers etched in my brain.

If I have to remember a number, say 4 or 5 or 6 digits, I try to come up with a combination of ball players that has it.  For instance, Jordan+Namath equals 2312.

Sometimes, I maybe can use an engine number, but with ball players I can normally stitch it together better.  472 is easy to remember.

The Tassie Devil(le)

You all are as sane as me.   If that is any recommendation. ;)

I see numbers all the time, and the last 6 numbers of mt phone number, which I picked myself out of what was available to me, were the engine displacements of the two engines that were available in a '59 Thunderbird.   I happened to be converting a '59 Thunderbird to RHD at the time.

I'm pretty good at remembering numbers but don't usually associate them with other things except for some engine sizes (427, 454, 472, 357 (also magnum pistol caliber) and of course the good old .30-06 .45, 5.56 & 7.62. small arms calibers.

No .223 or .308 for me though; those are sissy civilian numbers. Us real men (& women) use real NATO numbers like 5.56 & 7.62.  8)

We need to have a drink together.... All great conversations start with Caddy's and guns.
My SW457 is my 2nd carry choice, depending on where I'm going and what I'm wearing. Always stuffed
with 230gr flying ashtrays. All the IPSC full race ParaOrds were wide body 1911 types in 38super.

Gotta keep these beautiful old Caddy's safe after all. Either wearing it or under "life and property" or "all lawful purposes" if you're in a LTC state.

Me too.  I always correct them with the cubic inch designation.  It doesn't seem to phase them though.
