1975 Eldo conv top motor just clicks

Beautiful day in the neighborhood so naturally I decide to go for a ride with the top down ...
Unfortunately when I hit the top down button I just get a click noise ...
Any suggestions on where to start trouble shooting ?

Make sure you have battery voltage to the large wire going to the relay. If so, probably bad relay if it just clicks in up and down positions. If no voltage at large wire trace that back.

Where is the relay ? Behind the back seat ?

Near the motor. The relay activates the motor, the switch activates the relay.

No, the 66 does not have a relay. What is the problem?

Convertible top specialists or Hydro e lectric  have them.

Suggest you call and speak to them so they can help you troubleshoot what the problem is.  I'd hate for you to spend $50 or $60 and not have that correct the problem.

The power seat relay is the same relay (only mounting bracket is different). You can verify that is the issue by using your seat relay.

Also, since you hear the click, the relay is energizing. So you may just need to remove the relay cover and file the contacts clean.

Do these relays overheat and distort like the blower ones do?  Or is the issue with these just corrosion?

All the ones I have worked on were mainly corrosion issues. On a few I have seen the black base warped enough to not allow the contacts to touch properly.

I had this problem on a 75 & 76 Eldorado when I acquired them.- just a single click and nothing. In both cases it was the relay, under the motor behind the back seat.  the contact points in it were still okay- it was a connections to the relay which had burned out. 

I think the best thing is to beef up/ re-solder the connections rather than replace-   to cope with the >40 year old scissor top with worn parts.. otherwise it will burn out again

Thank you guys for all the help with this issue . Finally got the torque out and pulled the rear seat belts which released the back seat .. tightened up the ground wire and guess what ? Top went up and down like a charm.
