I am seeking knowledge of the screws that attach the floorboard transmission cover on my '37 LaSalle Coupe. I have none at present and seem to recall they had a fairly large round-head that was slotted? Am I correct? Suggestions for replacements needed.

Steve Passmore

You are correct. try 'Speciality Supplies'

Will do. Happy Thanksgiving, hope all is well with you and yours and appreciate your continuing advice.

Carl,
I have a replacement type that has a slotted/phillips head in stainless steel. They go under your carpet, but some people are fussy and need "original".  How many do you need? Yours for the shipping...

Many thanks. I have not taken a count of how many are necessary but sure glad you found some with the rounded head. I personally don't care if they take slotted, phillips or square drive as they'll be under the carpet, which I hope I don't ever have to raise once installed. I'll count them and let you know.

I don't think they handle them but a local Fastenal store might. As suggested previously they are available in dual Phillips/slotted head but at the moment I do not have a source and will post when I do.

I think what you want is sometimes called a shutter screw.  A low profile, extra wide head to give good clamping force and be unobtrusive under the carpet. I bought mine from McMaster Carr in 18-8 stainless. I think 1/4-20 is the right thread for this, and you can choose your length. Also good for attaching the firewall insulation pad.

I didn't think of McMaster-Carr, whom I do buy a lot from as I just imagined I'd have to buy 100 of them, and did not take the time to go through the catalog. I had not heard the term 'shutter' screw previously so have learned something. Thanks, I DO need more for the firewall pad.

Steve Passmore

The firewall pad screws have to be MUCH longer, and after fitting the surplus is merely cut with bolt croppers at the factory.

Steve,
You are correct again! I bought a few different sizes in boxes of 50-100. They're cheap enough to keep around for anything. 1/4-20 is a common size for other uses.
