Terry Rosenthal #10942

I have a fuel injected, 76 Eldo with 37,000 original miles.  Last time on a weekend cruise the engine died.  It would turn over, however, not stay running.  After letting it sit for about 15 minutes, it started right up and ran fine for about 10 miles, then died again.  After letting it cool down for another 15 minutes, it started up fine again.  This happened repeatedly until I finally got home.  It made for a long trip.  Does anyone have any advice or trouble shooting that I might try?  Thanks for any help.

A friend of mine had a F/I Seville he called the "Big Gulp" car because a similar situation would happen to him...he would then walk to a near by 7-11 or whatever and buy the Big Gulp 44 oz...by the time he got back to the car...and finished the soda...the car would be fine again...until it decided he needed another big gulp! Problem was with the INTANK fuel pump.

Agree with Wm. - the in-tank pump acts as a "primer" for the chassis fuel pump, and although the car may operate fine without the in-tank pump, it can cause you grief.

I had a similar experience for several months - checked the in-tank pump and it was functioning fine when testing, but had several experiences where the car would starve for gas and die.  Finally decided to drop the tank and inspect the stocking.  What I discovered was that the in-tank pump bracket which acts as a ground had become loose, causing the pump the operate intermittently.  Once I replaced the pump, no more problems.

It is a good place to start.
