Mike

How do I remove the rear brake drums from a 1938 Cadillac Series 60? Thanks.

Doug Houston

You'll need a puller that's designed for this type of drum. It's like a sort of bell, with four arms reaching out of it, for attachment to the lug studs. You'll use three of them. There is a large thread screw in the center of the "bell", which tightens to the axle shaft. You'll use a heavy hammer on the "dogbone: handle on the shaft. You'll tighten the screw until the grip on the shaft breaks. Usually, it goes with a bang.

Where to get a puller? Just keep looking!

Mike,Doug is correct in that it will require a HUB puller. I have rented a puller in the past from an independently owned rental shop.
If you know an older guy that has had his own shop/garage and he still has some tools left he may be talked into letting you use it.
Another thing to do. The axle has a large nut & washer. Remove the washer and replace the nut. That will prevent the brake drum from doing damage when it comes loose from the axle. HTH
