Just an FYI.

These vintage car sales "sites" are just personal info data gathering portals. Black holes. Rat traps.
Outdated ads and scams. Steer clear is my advice!
What jerky, dishonorable dipsquats.
Basically, if a website doesn't give you a phone number of the seller or a dealer name, its scamming you.

These guys sell real cars, but wouldn't know a camshaft from a flippin' mineshaft. They are awful, dumb, and ignorant. Not a good trifecta in my manual.

Cadillac Cream Puffs. (Yeah, right. "Caddy Bob" wanted to charge me 15% extra on a "rare" Caddy that he found on Hemmings. As if I hadn't first.)

I cant speak for anyone else, but I wish people would pass on posting Craigslist ads, the links
are always GONE.

Some tips I found:

So how can you tell if an online car sale is fake?

You find bad reviews online. Check out the seller by searching online for the person's name, phone number and email address, plus words like "review," "complaint" or "scam."
Sellers try to rush the sale. Resist the pressure. Scammers use high-pressure sales tactics to get you to buy without thinking things through.
They can't or won't meet in person or let you inspect the car. Scammers might have an excuse, like a job transfer, military deployment, or divorce, for why you can't see them or the car. But experts agree that you should have an independent mechanic inspect a used car before you buy it.
They want you to pay with gift cards or by wire transfer. If anyone tells you to pay that way, it's a scam. Every time.
The sellers demand more money after the sale for "shipping" or "transportation" costs.
The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) doesn't match the VIN for the car you're interested in. A vehicle history report can help you spot such discrepancies.

They want more than to get your personal information, they want to fraudulently obtain your money. Two years ago when I was looking for my car I ran across a site that had a great deal. I emailed and immediately got back a ton more pictures. The ad was in a Reno, NV classified and I'm just a couple hours drive from there so I asked if I could come see the car. She said she just got the car from her divorce and and needed to sell it quick (and cheap). I was told eBay Motors had it in their North Dakota warehouse but if I sent her $1500 worth of eBay gift cards, eBay would ship the car to me and I would have 60 days to accept/pay the rest or return it. Needless to say I passed on the deal.  The car was advertised on a half dozen sites. I checked them all and finally found one ad with the exact same pictures that was several years old and had a phone number. (and the plates weren't blurred out)  I called and the guy had sold the car 2 years earlier and shipped it to England. Scam confirmed!

A few weeks later I found another potential car and my email showing interest immediately got me more pictures like before and a woman who's aunt was dying and in the hospital and she had to sell it for her. This time eBay Motors supposedly had the car in Moab, UT. (I live in UT and Moab is just a tourist town - Arches) She also wanted eBay gift cards in order to let me try it out. As soon as she requested eBay gift cards I know I had run into the same scam.

Be careful out there!  tluke

I found a decent Caddy on Ebay, but it was local and I went to make the deal in person. Cars are always worse in person, but thats just my experience.
I would never buy one through Evil-Bay's "system."

A few years I got a call from someone was interested in a car I had sold years before. They found it through that 2040 site but the only platform I ever posted it on was on eBay through which it had been sold.

Another time I was contacted about a car they saw on "offer up" or something similar and again I never heard of the site. They were wondering why the vehicle was $12,000 on eBay and only $1,800 on offer up.

Damn, I could talk to you for an hour or more about this issue. Let's just say there are many ways the scammer picks up cash on you. The front end, the back end, and if you have a trade-in. In a nutshell, don't trade-in your car, don't finance a car, and that right there will save you lots. Not to mention the small shit, paint sealer, carpet care, the list goes on and on and on. I got an imported car from Japan, and that was one of the most reliable sites I have ever seen. To be honest, I was impressed by it after encountering so many scams, especially for vintage cars.

I put a vehicle up for sale on eBay and someone downloaded the pics and set up their own ad on one of those bogus sites.

I was googling images of the type of vehicle a few months later and there it was including my vehicle description word for word....lol

The authorities ought to go after these criminals, especially those that are within a Western jurisdiction. Cane or hang a few of them out in public like they did with horse thieves. That would slow a lot of it down. The degree of criminality that our society tolerates is extremely bothersome as it is a psychology student's homework. Clay/Lexi

I couldn't agree more, Clay, but now it becomes political, so I must be quiet.

Most things in the world are lies and scams.
Dont get me started.

Most Octane boosters.
"A smooth ride" that most manufacturers state in their BS ads. No car but a Rolls rides smooth anymore with all these big wheels and tuned suspensions.

Dealer "financing." (Go to your bank for a car loan).

John thanks. Yes, we don't want to put the Forum moderators on the spot. Not fair to them. Keeping it old car and Cadillac related, most car people are pretty good and always willing to pitch in and help fellow enthusiasts. They are generally a good lot to deal with, as has been my experience both on and off this Forum and also on the show field (and at the side of the road). Clay/Lexi

If I'm serious about a car but can't fly (or drive if its close enough) and put eyes on it first, then no way...

John,

I understand your caution.  But despite our wide range of political opinions.....many of us agree with Clay's suggestion.  Doing so would help keep our Cadillac/Lasalle safe.
