Title: Trying to post pictures
Post by: Cadman-iac on March 20, 2023, 10:58:28 PM
I'm still trying to figure out how to post some pictures on this new forum format. I followed the suggestions that Peter gave, but nothing happens when I select "add files".
What is the trick here? I'm using an android phone, I don't have a computer, so I've got to figure this out.
It wasn't a problem on the old forum. Any help or suggestions would be really appreciated.

  Rick

PS. I think the tips that Peter gives are for the old forum. The date it was posted was back in 2019,and I'm fairly certain that the new forum format only started last year.

G'day Richard,

After you have downloaded the picture/s to the Forum, don't forget to hit the "Upload Button"  Or they will never transfer.

  Hey Bruce,
Unfortunately once I hit the add files button, nothing else happens. I can't get it to work, but I'm probably missing something here.
I go to my gallery to select a picture, but I can't get it to transfer to the forum page. If I hit the "share" button, I don't get any options that allow me to take the picture to my post.
Since I'm on a phone, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. And it's been too long since I last posted on the old forum I don't remember what the procedure was. HELP!!
  Rick

When I select a picture from my files, I hit the "Add Files" button, then when the file opens up, I select the picture, then hit the "Open" button on that page, and the picture is automatically sent to the Forum message I am posting.   Once it is there, I have to hit the "Upload" button, for the actual transfer to take place.

When the transfer has been done, there will be a green line across the page.   Then I go to the next one.

I think that if I then hit the "Insert" button, the picture will appear as full size on the page.

To respond with picture you must select reply from User actions
Screenshot_20230321-075934-942.png

Then select attachments and other options.
Screenshot_20230321-080042-025.png
Select Add Files
Screenshot_20230321-080125-803.png
Choose picture
Screenshot_20230321-080217.png
Hit Upload
Screenshot_20230321-080241.png
If you want to add the picture direct into text move the cursor to the spot then select insert

Screenshot_20230321-080400.png

The insert will just be text until you post the comment.

You must add and upload each image one at a time. If you add four pictures but only hit Upload once then you will only upload that one picture

Now let's see if I inserted each photo in the correct spot in this post. Again I cannot preview with images

Ok I was able to edit and fix placement. Quick edit does not allow picture adjustment. I needed to use User Actions Modify

  Ok!!
Thank you for the explanation and pictures. Hopefully I can get this to work for me now, if I can remember all the steps.
 Wish me luck!

Well, I get to the "add files" option and it highlights when I select it, but nothing happens afterwards. Where am I going wrong here?

Some systems takes a few times of hitting it.  When I was uploading files my phone at first did not recognize that I was hitting a clickable button and was only highlighting Upload.

Honestly I think whoever designed the user functions of this new forum road the shortbus in school.  Whenever you design a system you must have users test it and understand how they are trying to use the feature.  How the designer intended for a feature to be used is irrelevant

Rick,

If you are on a PC (sorry I do not use my cell for posting or reply) you can only attach files when you hit the "REPLY", if you use the "QUOTE" option it does not give you the option for attachment and once the file is uploaded you "MUST" click on the "UPLOAD.

Another caveat with the new forum feature..!  :(

It is annoying that a common feature like adding a picture is complicated and hidden in drop down features.  But all these buttons that hardly ever get used are right on the top of every reply.  And even most of these are complicated to use. That is dumb

Yeah, I've noticed a few glitches while trying to post a text, had to hit the post button twice, but not always.
I've tried many different ways to make this "add files" button work and nothing seems to make any difference.
I've gone into my gallery to select a picture, but I don't get anything other than the "share" option, which doesn't bring the picture or file over to the forum. It's like there's a disconnect between the two that I'm not grasping.
Yeah, short bus may explain everything!

So is there something in that drop down menu that I need to use for this to work?
I honestly never understood why somebody thought that if you just draw pictures instead of explaining something it's easier for people to understand.

no. I my mind never touch this.  If you try to select that picture inert function it asks you to insert a url location not a path in your phone

This is that picture insert button.  Not worth using in my mind. Certainly not simple.  Screenshot_20230321-143533-782.png

If I press and hold the "add files" button, I eventually get the "copy, select all, and share" options, but it still doesn't transfer my pictures to the forum.
I'm beginning to think that it's a conspiracy to keep my pictures off the internet, lol !!

I even thought that I had to have something in the text before the add files option would work, but that's not it either. I don't know.
Maybe it's just that 2% rule.  You know the one that says that you must be 2% smarter than what you're working on, lol !!

No, I haven't ever tried any of that drop down crap. I have no idea what it does, and not enough knowledge to make it work, so I stay far away from it.

Sorry, I guess I missed this question.  No, unfortunately I don't get any options after pressing the add files button.  The only reaction I get from my phone is that the add files button will highlight, and if I continue to press it, then I'll get the copy, select all, and share options, but even those don't work if I click on them. It's a dead end.
I tried going to the gallery first to select a picture, thinking that I had to have the file ready to transfer, before I select "add files" but that doesn't work.
So I tried going to my gallery after clicking on the "add files" button, but that didn't work either.
It's as if the add files button is not working, even though it highlights.

Ok so it is doing this. It is not recognizing add photos as a clickable button. This copy or share is a function of your phone and not the forum function.  This has happen to me and I have had to try a few times. But once these three pop up I have to go out and try again.

Screenshot_20230321-150150-035.png

When selected correctly it should look like this.  You should see the selection for your phone files or access camera.  I have never had the access camera work properly. I only select from existing photos in files.   Screenshot_20230321-150213.png

no just click back up in the text box so that the highlight on the button goes away.  If you keep hitting it in the other manner it is stuck in the phone search function.  I noticed q quick light touch on add files works best. If my finger sits to long it brings up that phone function

I just logged out and logged back in to try this, but it still doesn't work.
The button has a black background with white letters, and when pressed, the letters turn orange, which to me says that it registered my selection, but doesn't seem to provide any further action.

Just tried the back up key to reset the add files button, but still no luck.
It does make the keyboard drop away when you click on it , but nothing else shows up as far as those 3 options you show that I should get.
Could it be a phone setting causing this? I'm doubtful, because everything else seems to be working just fine.

BTW, I want to thank you for taking the time to try and educate me on this. I guess I'm just not doing something right somewhere.

No problem.  It has to be something in the logic of your phone.  It must be expecting to do something that the forum is not doing or presenting to it.

On my phone I can replicate both scenarios, so I do blame whatever coding is in the forum with how it presents itself to the phones operating system. But the phone is another problem on its own.

Grand scheme the forum is cumbersome and not intuitive to users.  I really miss the Old 61-62 Cadillac forum. I think it was easier to use.  The Mid Century Cadillac forum was easier even though I think they used the same structure here. But it is certain whatever update was necessary recently was not to improve user experience.

Test posting of pictures, again!!
Still not able to post any pictures. After I tap, or double tap, or press and hold, I still get nothing.
I ran an update on my phone, and one for the advanced features app or whatever the #%&& it is, still nothing.
 What am I missing here?

Added a pic from my iPhone running IOS using Safari app with no issues then looked at settings under Privacy and security and Photos and see you can deny access by each app to your photos, camera or microphone. Most of the smartphones have dozens of settings to limit access like this. And iPhones are going to be different from the droids and other phones. I'm guessing it is a setting on your phone.

 Hi Jason,
Yeah, my phone is an android. I've been through every setting in it looking for something that would have an effect on this problem, but I don't see anything.
Thanks for your thoughts though, I appreciate it.
I guess I'll just have to get really good at describing things, to paint a picture, so to speak.
 Thanks for trying,

Ha ha ha!! I'll have to try and wrestle my wife's phone away from her!
But that's a good idea. Her's is a different model than mine, but it's still an android phone. I'll give that a try. Thanks for the suggestion.

If it is the same "type" phone using the same Operating System (OS), I think it is going to be more a setting than the phone model itself. The screen prints I saw in this post were different from my iPhone so I assumed it might be a Droid.  As little as I know about the iPhone IOS, I know zero about the Droids but assume they have similar settings. That is why it is always a good idea to describe the device and software you are using with techy issues like this. Carl's suggestion to try someone else' phone is spot on... give it a go. If it works you know it is probably a setting on your phone and you will see how it should work.
The thing about the iPhone is I found different way to limit access --> under Security, Under Photos, under each app.

I would also Google on "How to Prevent Access to Photos on Android Phone" or something similar. I plugged it in and quickly came up to info pointing to a "permissions manager". I didn't go any further.. but there did seem to be a lot of info out there for this type stuff for the Droids.

What does SMS stand for in an app? I thought maybe this was the problem because it was denied on one.  I allowed it, but still not working.

Thanks so much for the tip. I Googled it just like you said and then went in and looked at the permissions manager and there it was. It didn't dawn on me that I have to use Samsung internet while I'm on the forum.

Thanks, I just picked one quickly from my gallery to test it with.
The picture is of the front brakes on my 56. I added the self adjusting hardware so it'll be easier to keep it adjusted properly. I really hate having to crawl under a car because of my back. I don't bend like I used to anymore. Too much hardware in me now, lol!

First you click on user actions. then you choose reply. once you choose reply, you see a screen that will say click or drag files here to attach them. Touch the screen on that sentence and it will open a box for you to choose files. You can choose from Android system or files, choose files, and a screen will open with all your picture files. choose the one you want and it will upload automatically. I just tried it on my phone and it worked for me.
