Hello again!

Does anyone know what was the reason for changing to a 3 piece windscreen frame compared to a single piece frame?

And what was the last body number that had the single piece frame?

Thanks

Tony

Have you ever tried lifting the Solid brass frame when off the car? Its a hefty lunk. I,d say it was just easier to manage for chroming in 3 sections. Iheard somewhere that some cars  into the fw 80s had one piece tho Ross's #87? is 3 piece . His has stainless trim that isn't on later cars too. So three variations.

I'm thinking that it was difficult to cast (and perhaps there were problems with the castings themselves). Also, as you say, very heavy indeed even in pieces.  It must have been a relatively significant problem because it was sorted out prior to body #87.  Even #87 still had the first style, non-adjustable, overcenter clips to hold the back convertible top to the parade boot (and the non-adjustable clips must have been a nightmare for the owners to use).

But if we find out that the single frame was only used on a handful of cars, they could have been the test run batch and when the wrap around windshield worked, ie, wipers, convertible top etc, the design was changed and possibly the supplier.  This is the classis 2 cents worth.

Ross.
