What is it. Not hooked up and I am not sure where to start with it?

It is in front of the radiator.

If I knew a little more about it I could probably hook it up?

Looks like part of the A/C system, but I'm guessing, since my '57 is a non-aircon car. I've never seen anything like this, especially in front of the radiator. This car must have been messed with at some point. My 1.5 cents (it's not worth 2).

Thanks for the guess Mark.  Since the copper tube is pretty small but not hooked up to anything  I was guessing brake system?? I know the 1957 was a one year brake system  but I know little about it ??

The Tassie Devil(le)

Looks like it is a part of the A/C system, as I can see a "Sight Glass" in it.

I’m with Mark; it sure looks like an A/C aftermarket add-on of some kind and looks like it has a sight-glass. ???

Although the bottom one also seems to be an add-on dehydrator with a pressure switch which the ’57 did not have one. ???

:o

Were you able to trace the line(s) from it and see where they go?

Lines were cut off.  I am just starting to sort out 60 years of ???  Brakes very weak. Car runs well and has 80,000 miles believed to be original miles. Seats were still covered with factory clear plastic covers but last owner parked it in the sun and upper upholstery cover is falling apart.  Car is in upholstery shop now and I am planning my attack for when it comes home.

It's either an Oscillating Johnson Rod or a Kalupi Valve.

I don't know, but wanted to get my guesses in.

I’m with the A/C crowd.  I think the small tube is an oil return line

Gene hit the nail on the head.  That is a Marvel Inverse Oiler - an aftermarket upper cylinder oiling device.  The sight glass is used to set the flow rate to about 2oz of Marvel Mystery Oil per tankful.

This was the better of the units, the other being made by Ampco.

If you look at the carburetor base, you'll see where a plate would've been added for the oiler to connect to.  Hopefully it's been blocked off if it's disconnected otherwise you'd have a heck of a vacuum leak.

Thank you Gene and Dan. I have been completely baffled as to why my brakes seem to have no power assist.  The tubes are cut off near the gizmo but I have not looked for leaks in the manifold area.  I just need to know if I should hook it back up or remove it and seal the manifold .  Guess I will find some good advice here or flip a coin.

This forum has amazing bunch of guys and my thanks to all of them that have given me good advice through the years.

A little detailing and upholstery work and the 57 will be ready for summer.  Put new shocks on the LaSalle as it was bouncing all over the place.  1942 needs a finish up on the upholstery and I will be ready for a break in the spring.

I would just remove the adapter plate from below the carburetor with the fitting (if it hadn't already been done) remove the rest, throw it on eBay and buy a tank of high test with the proceeds.

Dan, I am pretty sure the plate is still there and is the reason my brakes take so much pedal pressure to work. I was looking in all of the wrong places.

Honestly, I am amazed by the incredible amount of knowledge and information that is available on this forum. Though I'm not a total fan of the electronic world, imagine how difficult and time consuming it would be to find this information in the 'old world', if you could find it at all! Blows me away.

Mark,   I think of it as a "Cadillac Brain Trust"   I try to give but so many have so much more knowledge. I started getting responses on this post quite quickly and had a full understanding in a few hours.
