Title: I need some color advice
Post by: FinCad on October 31, 2015, 06:23:07 AM
Hi,

I found an interesting color which I would like to have in my Cadillac.

Many people say it´s Dusty Rose 48A, but I think that is pretty far from that.

Anyone able to recognize this color ? Maybe it´s not from Cadillac paint charts ?

Thanks

It's not Dusty Rose.  It's not even a 1957 Cadillac color offering.

Whatever it is, I think it looks sharp on the car...

...then we are aligned, I could not find anything from Cad color from any manufacturing year which is matching with this.

Thanks

I once saw late '50s Desoto in a very similar color.

Looks nice on the Seville all the same.

That color is almost identical to 1969 Cadillac Code 47 Wisteria Poly , and there is a slightly darker variation of the same color Code 99 Chateau Mauve Firemist Poly. I hope this helps.

Guys,
Why do people add poly after the paint name??? The color charts say NOTHING about poly.

In checking my paint chip book, I found a chart which had two chips of 48 (and 48A) of 1957 Dusty Rose Poly. There was also a note saying that the color was changed to 48A. The chip is close enough to come to a couple of conclusions. The second photo referred to was at the 2014 GN, and a USA based car entering our judging (most likely) had the genuine color on it.

Given how color shots come over the web, the first car was either a close "modern" color or someone simply had his body man alter the paint slightly. I am not an expert, but don't modern two-step paints come out altered slightly from original chips with a brighter, smoother finish?

Recently, a poster was wanting the "right" maroon for his 1949 Cadillac and had had problems using a modern mix which came out different from what he was expecting.

Without raining on anyone's parade, could it be that we are seeing a mystery that "isn't?" In any case, I love the colour, too. (British spelling for emphasis.)

hmm, I am still having the small headache...anyway your explanation is making sense also.
Anyone knowing who is the owner for the GN2014 seville ? That would open the color mystery easily if the owner would share the color code.

Dusty Rose 1 and 2 were very close in color.  Not so outstanding as to discontinue the name Dusty Rose and replace it with Oxblood.

This isn't Dusty Rose.  Furthermore, somebody went through a lot of trouble to get a matching top installed on this example

And I believe the early use of the term "poly" referenced a metallic vs. Standard paint.

i have understood also that poly has been "translated" freely as metallic paint

In the 1969 Cadillac catalogue the Coupe DeVille is shown in Chateau Mauve. My paint chip chart said poly by the way.

I believe "poly" was added to the color description to indicate it was polyurethane paint. As to Dusty Rose, it is a much much lighter color (colour), but there was a color 52 Castile Maroon that looks like your colour:

Metallic pInts in the 1950's were referred to as "iredescents."

a good automotive paint supply could probably scan the color (not sure what they call it) and tell you the color and what colors are used to make it.

Jon,
Thanks for posting. That's exactly how I understand it. Somewhere around 1940 they were calling them luminesents.

Could it be a newer Cadillac paint color? It looks a lot like the 1975 Cadillac color "Rosewood" or the 1989 Cadillac colors "Rosewood" or "Light Rosewood." It really looks nice on that car shown! Good luck finding the right paint!

we are approaching the bottom of the pandoras box... indeed 1975 rosewood firemist could be very close and in this a bit poor picture roof is matching also the same way e.g is a bit darker http://automotivemileposts.com/cadillac/images/1975/cadi1975fbrosewoodfiremist.jpg

Hi

Anyone having 1957 Car with AMETHYST color ? that looks nice as well. Do you know why in some color chips that is called AMETHYST POLY and in some others AMETHYST IRIDESCENT ? Are those the same or different color ?

Would be nice to see some 57 pics in that color as I only find a few samples from the internet.

Sami,

It’s almost impossible to identify or compare colors using photos; and definitely wrong to try using printed illustrations. I looked through my color and upholstery books and found what I believe is the color combination. The roof appears to be 1976 Cadillac Elk Grain Mahogany Metallic code “M”. The paint appears to be 1975 Cadillac Rosewood code 78. Looking at these two color in sunlight they  are the best match to the pics in the ad you posted.

Both the car in the ad, and the GN picture were originally ’57 Cadillac  Copper Metallic code 98. The ad car shows a good representation of this color on metal interior surfaces. I suggest you purchase a ’75 color paint chart on eBay and look at Rosewood in various light. If you still like it, buy a pint and do a test panel before making your final decision.

HTH,
Ralph

If colors on the order of those being discussed are appealing to you, 1977 Cadillac "Desert Rose Firemist" Code 99 is another you may want to add to the list of contenders.  A seldom seem 1977 color but very attractive, IMO.

The later optional Firemist colors basically picked up when the previous "Eldorado" colors left off, therefore the use of one of these colors is all the more appropriate for an Eldorado in my view.

Hey there,

That's exciting! Choosing the perfect color for your Cadillac can really make it stand out. If Dusty Rose 48A isn't quite hitting the mark, it might be worth exploring other options. Sometimes, the perfect shade isn't on the standard paint charts. Have you considered custom colors or specialty finishes? Either way, I'm sure you'll find the perfect hue to make your Cadillac truly yours.

Best of luck with your search! 🎨🚗
