Title: Very rare "AC Delete" option w/501 optional motor
Post by: "Cadillac Kid" Greg Surfas 15364 on December 14, 2014, 10:55:29 PM
This is a shot of my '73 with the VERY rare "AC Delete" option that came as a part of the 501 motor option in that year.

Looks different with the High Stall Torque Converter.

What's a 501 motor option?

That was the engine that went to Texas.   Everything is bigger in Texas.

A/C was still optional in 1973. It hadn't been deleted; it was simply not ordered.

What is the engine code in the VIN? (5th character)

And by 1973 any Cadillac without Climate Control was both unusual and VERY undesirable. Unless one lived in North Dakota or Alaska.

I hadn't heard any good "Urban Myths" lately so I thought I would start a couple.  Bruce is right, it was a Texas only option, along with the 3200 RPM stall torque converter.  You might think the 1/2 inch fuel line might have been a clue.  The motor is out for a coat of Bill Hirsch paint (by the way, Hirsch recommends 2 weeks between painting and running the motor for the paint to cure.  Perhaps that might be why some folks have trouble keeping the paint looking good).  While the paint is drying I just happened to find a roller cam (MTS) that will go along with a few other modifications.
It ran a 13.1 Quarter mile, and I expect to get down deep in the 12s without power adders.  Still at just about 5000 pounds.
I guess my car is officially undesirable and probably would have a problem with the GN Judging, but I have a couple of others for that purpose.
They say you have to grow old, not grow UP.

Tony,
This post was "tongue in cheek".  My 73 is my  "little" hot-rod.  With the current modifications to the engine it should be making somewhere around 550 actual horsepower and over 600 pound feet of torque.  In order to get the motor into the horsepower range for high performance a high stall speed torque converter is used.  In simple terms it does not begin to transmit power to the transmission until the engine speed (in my case) reaches 3200 RPM.  Not real good for gas mileage on 110 octane racing gasoline.
I hope that answers your question.

Indeed Climate Control was an option then. There is a drive report on You Tube of a Pennsylvania based Green on Green '72 Eldorado Convertible that has neither Climate Control or lamp Monitors. Very interesting , if you study the car you will notice the far right hand dash vent is a plastic dummy not a vent at all. Again I find very sparcely ordered Cadillacs interesting seeing how Cadillac built them. I once owned a Silver with Black interior 1968 Calais Coupe that had a manual front seat , radio delete and the ONLY options were ... E-Z EYE tinted glass, Climate Control and factory installed plastic seat covers.
