Title: 1966 Rag joint
Post by: Cadillac George on March 19, 2024, 05:32:28 PM
Hi I want to replace the tag joint.  Any instructions on how to pull back the steering column would be appreciated.  Shop manual is not that informative.  Thanks for help

The only successful way to do it would be to loosen the steering column at the dash, and simply pulling it rearwards.   This could also include the hole through the firewall.

BUT   CAUTION   The Gear Shift Indicator would need to be removed so as not to bend it.

You may have to undo the Gear Shift Lever, to allow movement, and probably other stuff.

Best have a helper to assist, as your arms aren't long enough.

Plus, when pulling it backwards, don't turn the wheel so when you want to put it back together, it all realigns correctly.

Thanks everyone for your advice.  I was able to remove the steering column and replace the steering joint.  Next on to the brakes and draining the fuel tank!

Where did you get the replacement rag joint? What do you think of the quality of it?
