We're starting in on the frame-off restoration of Buttercup, my 1949 Coupe DeVille.  Can anyone tell me the correct upholstery for my car?

Jon:

Trim Code #69 is a combination of tan Broadcloth and Beige leather and Beige imitation leather. According to the Master Parts book there was no paint combination # 23.

Jon,

I suggest you buy the 1948-1949 Cadillac Authenticity Manual, which has this information and lots more.  Check it out at the following web site:

I checked a couple editions of the parts book (49,52,54) , NO CODE 23 or higher. Then I checked a Sherwin Williams book, code 23 is a late 1949 code for Fiesta Ivory (code22) lower and black upper. A note says it was only used on convertible and Coupe de Ville. This code was also used in 1950-51. A Dupont book doesn't list code 23,but lists code 24. Which it says is Triumph Blue Met. upper and Corinth Blue lower.  There  must be a dealer letter that notes the new colors, I hope you can find a copy. It will be hard to prove when the parts book is wrong. Warren

Jon,

This is of no value in authenticity discussions but the black over white color combination may indeed be correct. When I looked at your picture I recalled seeing that combination as a used car. Fiesta Ivory has a yellow tint that most people would immediately call “off white”. Warren is correct that Black/Fiesta Ivory was a featured CDV combination in ’50 â€" ’51 and was featured in magazine ads.

As an aside, does anyone remember the “Coupe de Ville” â€" large V - seen on some ’49 “C’ pillars. They were somewhat common and I’ve always wondered if this was dealer or aftermarket  item.

I also came to the conclusion that Comb.#23 which was used for the 1950 cars must have been used at least for the late 1949's. My Ditzler paint book shows neither 23 or 24. My DuPont book, as Warren says, shows the Blue combination, #24, for 1949 but has no #23.These two combinations are not listed in the Master Parts books or are they mentioned in the Cadillac Serviceman that I could find. Perhaps they were noted in the Cadillac Accelerator, which I don't have for 1949.

Guys,
This would be a perfect time for Jon to purchase a invoice for his car. It will solve this mystery.
