1957 Cadillac upper Hood Mechanism What is this For ?

Hello,
  Does any one know  the purpose of this Mechanism located underneath the hood  (Hanging )towards the windshield side .  I also wonder if it's mounted correctly on the hood of my car

It appears to be mounted correctly.

That gadget is the "anti rattle strip".  It's job is to fold up when you
lower the hood and keep the rear edge tight against the firewall sheet
metal and therefore prevent it from vibrating and making noise.

These were used for a number of years -- my '55 has one also.

Many of these fell by the wayside-- my '55 when I bought it did not have
one.

Thanks for the information Mike ,  I do not hear any rattles in that area so i guess it works just fine . Also thank you for confirming it is attached properly , as it could be assembled backwards .
