I think we are all losing the point here.
As for the cost to rebuild it, or refresh it, that is not the question.
If the car was down here in Tasmania, I would buy it in a heartbeat.   I have a nice 500 and TH400 to go in it.

Bruce. >:D

I far as I recall at the start of this thread the value of it was exactly the question. Now your suggesting rodding it??    thats an entirely different question and one I could probably agree with because of the state of this car even though rodding is not my way. A question perhaps that should have been placed on the modified forum not here?

If you like it so much Bruce have it shipped down. I had two 41 Cadillacs shipped here in a container in 95 that didn't even have wheels on when I bought them so you shouldn't need it to be in Tasmania if you value it that much.

I'm feeling that Spyder will buy it just to go against the flow >:D

Sorry, but can't afford it now that I have just purchased a '55 Buick Special Coupe.   Plus, the container freight down here would be horrendous for just one car.   And at the moment, I don't need a "Container Filler".   Did that back in 2008.   And it was a boat.

If the owner wants 1600,that means he would take 1500,and if I see something for sale at 1500,it means that they would take 1300, and when it is at 1300 it means they really want 1000 for it,i would offer him 1000 for it and see what he says, all he will say is no?,Heck I have wasted more then that on a lot less ::).Talk to the owner a bit and see if you can get a feel for his expectations on the car,if you get it I would get it home up on all 4 wheels and see how bad it really is.You have to be willing to take a gamble if you want to make anything happen in this type of hobby. I am a used car salesman and, this is how I see these type of deals 8). Harvey

About 30 years ago I bought a 1936 Packard coupe in similar condition.  It was very rough and missing a lot of parts.  It cost me $2500.00.  At the time, I could have bought a nice driving example for about $12,000.  I restored the car over a 14 year time period, from 1985 to 1999.  I spend thousands of dollars and hours on the car.

I took a rusted out parts car and turned it into a Packard Club National 1st place award winning car.

I was totally at a standstill with the car when I first got it because the side aprons or rockers, the part that extends from under the doors to the running boards were totally shot, rusted away and looked like lace after sandblasting the body.  The bottoms of the doors were gone, and so were the bottoms of the cowl, as well as the rear apron.

I was able to purchase doors, rockers, and lower cowl sections from a guy that hacked up a beautiful coupe to restore a much more valuable convertible.  If I had not found these parts I may have given up on the car.  The rockers are a complex stamping, curved and stepped from top to bottom and also compound curved from front to back.

The LaSalle in the photo looks about as rough.  The doors look bad, the rockers probably are too, as well as other parts.

If you can do sheet metal repair and have welding skills and can do a lot of the work yourself, it will take a lot of time, but if you are up for it, that's your call.

In order to get it to be a driver, it's going to take a lot.  I hate to say it, but these types of cars can be re-invented as a street rod a lot easier that doing a restoration.

I would take on a project that would be a solid car needing mechanical work, which I can do.  Bodywork is not something that I am good at so I don't even try it.

If you can get the car for $1000 to $1500 and you want to try to start doing some work on it, you can't lose too much in terms of cash, but looking at the body, the amount of rust that shows up in the photos tells me that once you start taking this car apart, you will encounter a lot more than what it looks like in photos.

Only you know and you are willing to do and capable of fixing.

I think the bottom line is really $1,500 (delivered to my door by the seller), and I think a resto/hot rodding might be the best way to go with her if I buy her.  I don't think that I can get hurt at 1,500 like Harvey said.  until I start to take it apart I wont really know what I have to work with.  Tomorrow I am going to see it for the final time and the seller is going to pick it up with a LARGE fork lift so I can see under it, the frame etc.

Spyder

Thorough inspection today. I'm definatley passing. She's too far  gone for me. Sad!!!

If it was in my country, people would pay more than $1500 for such a car. The parts alone are worth more.

Mo,
I'm SURE he's not saving the car to part it out!!
Spyder,
Glad to see you buying it. I hope everyone on this board & elsewhere helps you restore the car.
Post a pic of the data plate on the cowl & we'll help you decode it.
Good Luck.

Good Man Spyder! That car is too unusual and rare to let it just rot away. There should be plenty of support in finding the mechanicl part needed.     Harry
