What I have seen is there Are two kinds of "hobbyists". Those that like to do and those that like to own. The work required to turn a sows ear into the proverb ale silk purse is the E ticket ride for some

Understood.
I am a guy that does all his own work on my Caddys. Do I care about resale? No. Do I want to buy a car that needs a bunch of work instead of a car that is in much better shape to start with. Definitely.
I think the point is not the work it's those who complain they have too much in the car when the dust settles.

The point that I was trying to make (as well as Scot I'm sure) is if you have  (pick a round number) say, $7000.00 to spend on a classic Caddy it almost never is a wise choice to decide to buy the the $3000.00 same car, same year, same in most respects other than poorer condition, and believe you will make the 3K car into the 7K car buy spending less than the $4000.00 difference.  And to be sure, even the "nice" cars I have purchased over the years I have found will present plenty of opportunity to satisfy E ticket urges and a sense of accomplishment.
