Title: 1962 Cadillac Heater Core Replacement
Post by: domer on August 22, 2008, 09:24:13 PM
Can anyone tell me where is the best place to get a new heater core for my '62 Caddy and how difficult the task is.  My core started leaking and I'm still not sure if I want to replace it or just repair it.
Thanks

Dominique, look for a sign stating "BEST PLACE IN TOWN TO TAKE A LEAK". Let the raditator folks determind if the heater is repairable. You can judge by the guarentee wheater or not you want to go "New OR the repair route. HTH Good Luck,JIM

I took mine to the local radiator shop, and thy re-cored it. But there are sources for replacments, too. I get a lot of parts from Dan's Classics, in Portland, Oregon. A web search will get you to their site.

It's not that big a job to replace - mainly involving contortions, grunting, and cursing. It will be MUCH easier if you don't have AC. Hint to the wise - If you do have AC, it will pay off in time and bloody knuckles if you first remove the right inner fender shield. You'll have much easier access to the nuts holding on the lower part of the AC box.

Contact me off-list, or call, if you want a play-by-play walk-through. My contact info is in the directory, and should also be listed on this site under technicians.

Thanks for the response.  I apologize for taking so long to get back with you.  I haven't even attempted to get to the heater core, as now my breaks are not working properly.  I feel no resistance when I press the brake and have to jam my foot on the pedal to get the caddy to stop.  Could it possibly be the vacuum check valve.  My 52 Fleetwood is acting up as well. It cranks really hard and sluggish and my oil light flickers  on and off when I come to a stop.  Too many issues too little time.  Do you know where I could find the correct style temperature sending unit for 62 Coupe DeVille.
Thanks
