further clarification. the wiring expert left me with the following. the starter turns all the lights are connected and work. he left me with no wires hooked to the generator but run to it and no wires to the voltage regulator. also no wires to horn or horn relay. question is can I try to crank it like this ? thanks john

Apart from you getting no generator power, no starter cut out and running your battery down the answer would be Yes. I have driven many miles in emergency just on battery when a generator fails.

thanks the reason I ask is that's how my so called expert left the car. he claimed he didn't hook up cause he was not sure. at least he did no damadge. so maybe I can try to fire the car off unhooked. thanks john

Glen

If I understand what I have read here the car will not crank because the ground circuit for the starter relay is not connected to the generator.  If you can find that wire and ground it it should crank OK.
