Is this the correct carpet for a 56 Eldorado Biarritz?

Hi,
we ordered a carpet for a 1956 Eldorado Biarritz and this is what we got (see attached pictures of the green carpet).
According to some 56 Cadillac experts the carpet should be gros point.
The 56 Cadillac specification data book states it should be "rayon filament loop pile"

Is the carpet we got correct or should it look differently? More like the texture of the red carpet sample which is attached?

Thanks for any input!

According to the samples I have from Jenkins, the right carpet is like the red sample you are showing.

The red carpet comes the closest to original.  My '56 Biarritz was an incredibly original car when I sold it.  The '56 carpet is very close to the rest of the '56 GM line, with one addition.  Upon close inspection, there was a patterned little "squiggle" on the carpet like the red one.  I don't know what the green one is, except I had one like that in the kids' room a long time ago.

Thanks Tony! So we all agree that the green carpet is definitely totally incorrect. It has cost a fortune and it came from a Cadillac restorer who should know what he is selling...

Gerald,

??? Have you look at the Specification Manual to match your interior code with the correct carpet color?

According to the manual red carpet is/was available on code 18 and 19 (see attachment below).

Just in case you do not have a copy of the spec manual you can download it from the GM archive site-> https://www.gmheritagecenter.com/docs/gm-heritage-archive/vehicle-information-kits/Cadillac/1956_Cadillac_VVI.pdf

Good luck..!

Thanks for the link! We already had a look at the manual :-)
My question here is more about the structure and material itself than the color. The car is a Emerald Green Biarritz. As the car was restored years ago in the wrong color with some incorrect materials we ordered a new carpet since the car is getting a frame off restoration at the moment. We were not 100% sure how the correct material would look like, but when the carpet arrived last week it definitely looked like the wrong material :-( I just wanted some confirmation that we are right and that he sent the wrong carpet, so that we can confront the seller with facts.

I got a reply from the seller of the carpet and I´m not sure what I should think about it...

QuoteThe grosspoint was only produced in two colors for the 1955-1956 Cadillac, red and beige; I have red grosspoint in my ’55 Eldo convertible “Bad Girl”.  General Motors also produced Daytona, which is similar to grosspoint, and was used for several General Motors models; they look similar in the car but if you hold them next to each other you can see the difference.  There are several shades of Daytona green which I can send you samples of; however, it is a more expensive carpet. The loop carpet was also available in several colors including several shades of green, and was also available for all of the 1955-1956 Cadillac models, including the Eldorado.  It is less expensive than the upgrade of the Daytona.

To answer your question, all three, the loop, Daytona and Grosspoint were used in the Eldorado and would be correct for a 1956 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz.  I have a 1956 Biarritz here in that same color combination with the loop carpet.  I have had this car for over 25 years.

Does this sound right?

Gerald,

I’m not an expert on the different carpet styles mention on the seller statement other members on the club may be.

All I can say is what the Spec Manual states as the type of carpet used for the year and model.

If you need some reassurance you can check -> http://1956eldorado.blogspot.com/ and reach out to Lou via that site he owns the same model and year Eldorado Biarritz.

Good luck..!

I have seen any number of '56 Eldorados.  Mine was blue.  My friend in Florida is white with black carpet.  None of them were like the green carpet

There is a picture of the only guy I would trust to supply that carpet.  His name is Karl and he is pictured in the most recent edition of the Self Starter/Restorer as he was with us at GN Las Vegas.  He was the supplier for the complete interior for the last two Eldorado's that I've restored (a 55 and a 56).  He's located in Virginia.

Thanks I have contacted Lou. He is verrrrrry helpful and a great expert for the 56 Eldorado Biarritz. He confirmed that the carpet we got is totally incorrect and that only one style was used for the 1956 Eldorado which is called "Daytona". Thank you all for your great help!
