I have been investigating the purchase of an XLR & have found very few in Southern California where I live. When I finally find one that meets my criteria- 2008 or 09, black exterior, under 40K miles, preferably from  the west, southwest, pacific northwest -  I plan to have a professional inspection company evaluate the car. My major concern is evaluating the Northstar engine. Any guidance on experience with the engine of that era & what to look for would be much appreciated.

Bob,

Google the specifically XLR-centered online forums, and read them.  There's a lot of good advice on what to look for and how to make sure you get a satisfactory ownership experience.  And there are a lot of helpful owners and enthusiasts who can help if you have a problem.

Hope that helps,

Chris Cummings

By 07-08 the Northstar engine was sorted out.
I know a Cadillac factory tech that specializes in Northstars.

Make sure the car is fully warmed up and do a few full throttle runs with the car and see if it heats up.
Gauge should remain in the middle.

Check for oil leaks.

Believe 93 was the first year for the North* engine?  By the mid-2000's, the bugs were resolved and there is not a big worry about the reliability of the block.
